Mini report from David Hawes-Gatt
Chestfield (Ash Evans and Will Ferneyhough) v Redlibbets (Darren Read and James Reynolds). I joined the match on the renowned 14th hole on the Spitfire course at West Malling, with Redlibbets one down at that point. This index 1, 332 yard par 4 has what many would say is a weird layout, with a drive down into a valley and then a blind shot into a small green. With Darren playing off 2 and giving shots all round, he made a good putt to birdie the hole, enough to halve Ash’s par 4. James managed a decent par 4 with a shot on the next, bringing the match all square. Will hits it to 3 foot on the short par 3 16th, Darren lips out for a birdie, gets his par, matched by Ash, but Will misses the putt so it remains all square. 17th, halved in 4, so all square standing on the 18th tee. A tough 171 yard par 3, index 9, with water on the left, means Will and James both get shots. James pulls his tee shot left of the water, seemingly ok, but not in great shape. Darren pushes his right of the greenside bunker, Ash follows him but ends up in the bunker (which we find is GUR). Will hits a good strike to back right of the green. Unbelievably James’s ball can’t be found, he goes back to the tee and hits a brilliant shot, this time to 2 feet from the hole. Ash and Darren both miss out on making par, so it’s then up to Will to hold his nerve and get down in two to win the match. His putt rolls down the hill to around 18 inches, normally a gimmee I suspect, but not at this stage in the game! James makes his putt for a great 4 under the circumstances, but Will makes the short putt for a 3 net 2 and a win.
Congrats to Chestfield the winners of the Invicta Cup for 2025. Special thanks to West Malling for hosting the final and for providing breakfast for the players.
